Our Story

Community Youth Program was founded in August 1998 by a group of parishioners at St. John’s Episcopal Church who recognized a gap in after-school and summer programming for middle school students in Roanoke City. After listening to families and researching community needs, they created a program to provide consistent academic support and enrichment for youth.

Over time, CYP expanded to serve students in grades 3–8, allowing the program to build longer, more meaningful relationships and support students through critical developmental years. Many students remain with CYP for five years or more.

Beginning in fall 2025, CYP expanded again to include high school programming, giving long-term students the opportunity to stay connected as they prepare for graduation and life beyond school.

While CYP is housed at St. John’s Episcopal Church, it is an independent nonprofit organization and is not affiliated with any religion. There is no cost for students to attend. CYP is funded through grants, donations, and community fundraisers.
